Bi-layered polyurethane – Extracellular matrix cardiac patch improves ischemic ventricular wall remodeling in a rat model

2016

As an intervention to abrogate ischemic cardiomyopathy, the concept of applying a temporary, local patch to the surface of the recently infarcted ventricle has been explored from a number of design perspectives. Two important features considered for such a cardiac patch include the provision of appropriate mechanical support and the capacity to influence the remodeling pathway by providing cellular or biomolecule delivery. The objective of this report was to focus on these two features by first evaluating the incorporation of a cardiac extracellular matrix (ECM) component, and second by evaluating the impact of patch anisotropy on the pathological remodeling process initiated by myocardial …

Detection of Left Ventricular Systolic Dysfunction in Cardiac Amyloidosis with Strain Rate Echocardiography .

2006

Background We examined the potential role of Doppler myocardial imaging including tissue velocity imaging, strain imaging, and strain rate imaging for detection of left ventricular systolic dysfunction in cardiac amyloidosis (CA) and determined the minimum dataset required to make the diagnosis. Methods and Results Doppler myocardial imaging was performed in 103 patients with amyloidosis (AL). Peak longitudinal systolic tissue velocity, systolic strain rate (sSR), and systolic strain (sS) were determined for 16 left ventricular segments. Radial and circumferential sSR and sS were also measured. Patients with increased left ventricular wall thickness were classified with advanced-CA, and the…

Noncompaction of the Right Ventricle

2010

Noncompaction of the ventricular myocardium is a disease characterized by an increase of the ventricular trabecular meshwork caused by arrest of the normal endomyocardial morphogenesis (Figs. 1, 2, 3). In accordance with the normal human anatomy, the left ventricular wall is well compacted with a few thin trabeculae; on the contrary, the normal right ventricular wall is furrowed by many trabeculae (the trabecula of the marginal septum as well as other ones). For this reason, the term ‘‘noncompaction’’ usually refers to an exclusive or prevalent disease of the left ventricle [1–16]. Recently Song and Aragona et al. [1–3] reported two cases of isolated right-ventricular noncompaction. Accordi…

Sustained reentry in a 3d regionally ischemic human heart. A simulation study

2016

In this work, we have studied the vulnerable window and propagation patterns in a human heart during acute ischemia. A 3-D biventricular model of a human heart with realistic heterogeneity and fiber orientations has been considered. The ischemic region was located in the anterior left ventricular wall mimicking the occlusion of the circumflex artery. The electrical activity of the tissue was modeled with the monodomain model along with a modified version of the ten Tusscher 2006 ionic model. The model predicts the generation of sustained re-entrant activity in the form of a rotor around the ischemic zone. Patterns in the form of figure-of-eight were also observed within the vulnerable windo…
